Who doesn't like to take a stroll along a beach, taking in the salt air and enjoying the sound of the waves breaking on the shore? Here at Home Farm we are fortunate having a number of beaches which can be easily visited while staying with us. Here are some ideas for beach visits on both our east and west coasts.
East coast
Rosemarkie Beach (Black Isle)
Situated less than twenty minutes away from Home Farm, this beach is a justifiably popular destination. At Chanonry Point the beach is a gentle shingle curve adjacent to the golf course, but soon becomes soft sand. Rosemarkie beach is one of the best places on the Moray Firth to spot our resident bottlenose dolphins. Popular with locals and visitors alike the beach provides gentle walking and views across the water towards Fort George. The beach boasts a community run café, ideal for a coffee and a cake at the end of your walk.
Nairn Beach
Located ten miles east of Inverness, Nairn has not one but two beaches to explore. Heading along the east coast the beach literally stretches for miles along the coast. Walk for as long as you want (or can), again both harbor porpoises and dolphins can spotted.
Dornoch Beach
Located about an hours drive north of Home Farm this beach lies along the northern shore of the Dornoch Firth. Close to the villages famous golf course “Royal Dornoch” the beach has acres of clean sand stretching both directions from the nearby car park.
West Coast (Wester Ross)
The beaches of Wester Ross are amongst the most beautiful in the Highlands. All are clean and safe with excellent water quality for bathing with easy parking close by. Here is a selection of some of the best for you to spend a long lazy day on whilst on holiday at Home Farm.
Red Point Beach
Actually two beaches for the price of one, these lonely and beautiful beaches can be visited by taking the single track road from Badacro. The beach has towering sand dunes to explore. Take the cost walk south and you will come to a second beach with ruins of an old salmon fishing station. Excellent views over the sea towards Skye with many species of bird, both on sea and land. All three species of divers can be seen in season.
Firemore Beach
Located on the west shore of Loch Ewe, on the road to Cove, this is a safe and sheltered sandy beach. Its dry island can be visited at low tide. Keep an eye open for the cattle that share this beach with the visitors.
Gairloch Beach
This is a popular beach with some good facilities. The golf course café offers tea, coffee, sandwiches and other light refreshments. Toilets are available on the car park. The beach offers some good sand dunes and sheltered spots can be found for picnics. Take a short walk in either direction, scramble up rocks or follow the path upwards and you will be rewarded with some lovely photographs across the beach.
Mellon Udrigle
This is a great beach, with views to the mountains of Sutherland, with good coastal walks and rocks to climb and explore. If you want to find a beach that is away from it all you can't do any better.
Gruinard Beach
This can be one beach or three depending on the tide! All are safe and clean. The shallow water is enticing and very good for a dip!! Opposite the beach is the car park with a trail leading to the Eas Dubh Falls.
